Russ Lambert, un boxeador norteamericano que accidentalmente mató a un contrincante en el ring, vive en Sudamérica y participa en combates de segunda categoría. Allí conoce a Clare Shepperd, la antigua novia de un gángster, a quien el sicario Cappy Gordon persigue con intención de matarla. Russ y Clare se enamoran y hacen un romántico viaje a la Montaña del Bienestar, a la que sólo se accede por funicular. A ese plácido rincón llega también Cappy. Tras una noche de fiesta en el hotel de montaña, Russ, Clare y Cappy coinciden en el funicular de descenso.
