Miranda est une belle aubergiste qui vit dans une ville de la vallée du Pô à la fin des années 40. Elle devient veuve après que son mari a disparu pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, mais refuse de se remarier, espérant le retour de son mari. Son amant est le transporteur Berto, mais pendant son absence, elle a également des aventures avec d'autres hommes. L'histoire s'inspire librement de la comédie en trois actes La locandiera de Carlo Goldoni.
