1940. Le petit Ernst a tout pour déplaire aux autorités : un caractère indiscipliné et un père vendeur ambulant. Lorsqu’il apparaît aux fonctionnaires zélés du régime nazi qu’il appartient également à la communauté yéniche, l’enfant est placé dans le sanatorium du docteur Veithausen. L’établissement applique le programme d’euthanasie du 3e Reich envers les jeunes malades et les handicapés mentaux. Seul pensionnaire en bonne santé, Ernst voit ses camarades mourir les uns après les autres et veut réagir. Qui peut-il rallier à sa cause ?
